What is Polio Plus?

 

After 20 years of hard work, Rotary and its partners are on the brink of eradicating this tenacious disease, but a strong push is needed now to root it out once and for all. It is a window of opportunity of historic proportions.

 

Your contribution will help Rotary raise $200 million to match $355 million in challenge grants received from The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation which has been agreed. The resulting $555 million will directly support immunization campaigns in developing countries, where polio continues to infect and paralyze children, robbing them of their futures and compounding the hardships faced by their families.

 

As long as polio threatens even one child anywhere in the world, children everywhere remain at risk. The stakes are that high.

 

So every £2 you raised or contributed on this walk will be matched by a £3.55 grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.  If you cannot walk your contribution will still be greatly appreciated. 

 

Sponsored Walk.

 

The Rotary Club of Royston have organised a sponsored walk based on the Hertfordshire Way. Walk through some of the most beautiful countryside in the county and raise money for Polio Plus at the same time..

 

As the Hertfordshire Way is 193 miles long, the walk has been organised into 16 discrete walks to take place over 8 week ends between November 2009 and June 2010. The stages average 12 miles in length.

 

You don't have to walk all 16! Just choose those stages that you wish to take part in. If 12 mile sounds too much, just join us for the morning or afternoon.

 

Rotary Clubs in Hertfordshire and the abutting counties are invited to take part to raise money for Polio Plus.  The walk is also open to any member of the public who would like to join us.
