What is Rotary?

Rotary International

Our members are men and women of all ages who are business and professional people or community leaders, keen to utilise their skills and resources to help others.

With 33,000 clubs in some 200 countries and geographic regions across the world, boasting 1.2 million members, Rotary is far reaching. In Great Britain and Ireland alone, there are more than 55,000 Rotarians in 1,850 clubs. Each member enjoys the opportunity to give something back to communities near and far, learn new skills, network with other business people and have a huge amount of fun.

Rotary runs countless humanitarian projects locally, nationally and internationally, and also partners with many charities worldwide. Members initiate community projects that address many of today’s most critical issues - such as violence, drug abuse, HIV/AIDS, hunger, the environment and illiteracy.

Rotary clubs are autonomous and determine service projects based on local needs. They also work with and for young people to address challenges facing young people today. In large cites, often plagued by urban violence or natural disasters, Rotary has the community-based network to help.

What we do

By combining their skills and resources, our members are able to make a real contribution to the lives of others.

Members volunteer their time to serve their local communities, through activities such as supporting community events, running projects to promote the achievements of young people, running educational programmes and supporting local businesses. Clubs also raise hundreds and often thousands of pounds/euros for community projects and local charities.

Because Rotary is found in 200 countries and geographical regions, we are in a unique position to be able to reach people in need all over the world, from running life-changing projects in developing countries to making an immediate response to disaster-hit regions.

In addition, Rotary has its own charity, The Rotary Foundation, which funds the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty throughout the world

Rotary Club of Royston

Since 1962, the Rotary Club of Royston has been working to serve the local community, and to address global problems of disease and poverty.

We are part of the international Rotary movement, with millions of members and thousands of clubs in countries worldwide. Our Club has around 40 men and women members, who live or work in the area and who are leaders in their profession or occupation.

We meet every Tuesday evening. There may be a speaker on a topic of interest. Other meetings are given over to discussing the business matters of the Club; and every so often, our spouses and partners join us for the evening.

We run major events, like the annual Kite Festival, which raises money for charity, and the Technology Tournament, developing the skills of young scientists at local schools. We always aim to have fun while helping others, and we organise a variety of excursions, visits and social events throughout the year.

Our activities are organised by a series of committees e.g. Community Service, International, Youth, Sports & Social.

Every member belongs to at least one committee.

The Club is linked with the Rotary Club of Paray le Monial et Charolais in France, with whom regular exchange visits are made.
